Tinos, Syros, Delos 8 days Trekking

1st day: Athens

Arrival in Athens. Settling in the hotel. Visit of Plaka, a very picturesque Athenian neighborhood, and free afternoon in order to visit the Athens Archeological museum. We spend the night in the hotel in Athens.

2nd day: Rafina-Island of Tinos

Early In the morning we have a transfer to the port of Rafina. (appx 45 min). Then we take a boat to Tinos the isle of dovecotes and small catholic chapels. We go to the hotel and get settled and afterwards we get the first visit of the capital of the island and the “Orthodox church of Evaggelistria” . Swim and dinner in a local tavern having traditional food of Tinos.

3rd day: Ktikados-Xatzirados-Tabarados

We leave the hotel on foot. The day is partly devoted to discovering the dovecotes of Tinos which boasts more than 3000. In the old times pigeons were sold to seafarers who came to the island to stock up with supplies. Following the paved paths (kalderimia), we will visit the old villages of Ktikados, Xatzirados and Tabarados, the heart of traditional dovecote architecture. We have lunch and then we go down towards the Kionia bay on a path on the side of the hill. In the distance we can see the island of Siros. The sheep and the numerous chapels along the way remind the rural and at the same time very religious character of Tinos. We swim and then take a bus back to the hotel. (5 hours of walking; altitude +/-420m).

4th day: Chora-Xoburgo-Chora

We go up to Xoburgo to an old Byzantine fort via an old roman path. The view of the Aegean is remarkable. Then we go down to Volax, an isolated, small, sparkling white village in the middle of a plateau surrounded by hills of round granite blocks. In the middle of a maze of little streets reigns a catholic church. Indeed the coexistence of the Orthodox and Catholic Church in Tinos is one of the particularities of the island. We go on to the village named Falatados; we have lunch and return by bus. We can swim in the afternoon.(4 hours of walking; altitude+589m, -200m).

5th day: Syros-Delos

According the ferry departures for Syros and Delos, we take the boat to the isle of Delos where Artemis and Apollo were born according to mythology. We visit the archeological sites and the museum. We return to Tinos for the night.

6th day: Chora-Pirgos-Ormos Panormou-Chora
We have the morning free and we can visit the cathedral and the Virgin Mary icons. We then take the bus to the village of Pirgos where we start our walk to the small port of Panormos. We swim and have lunch there. Next we walk to the Kira Xeni monastery and return to the village of Pirgos, which boasts a good number of marble sculptors. It is worthwhile visiting the studios where very strict traditional rules of working the marble still apply since the time when the Greeks were building the island of Delos. Return to Chora by bus. (3/4 hours of walking, altitude +/-470m).
